You should get in touch with NGOs in your area first. Spend sometime with them and get to know the gritty details of social work. You would probably have to work in places that include rehab centers or cancer hospitals and its likes. You would probably be giving conselling and emotional support to these patients. Volunteering abroad for social work is a different ball game altogether with differences in culture, and language, these act as barriers in communication and will make your job tougher. I hope you realise that you would travel to either of the South American, African or South Asian regions. The sort of help they would require is varied and range from disaster relief to child welfare to even warzones. A lot of international NGOs' scout for volunteers and you should inquire with the local NGOs in your area for such opportunities. All the best in your endeavour and God bless..

There is two paths you can take. You can help people one on one, which is limitted only to the time you have available, or you can build a business or orginization that will allow you to get many people to help many people. You will be able to help more people, and also, the business will allow you to travel and grow. You should really look into non profit businesses. Learn how they're run and various things that are possible. I know a few people that travel to various countries, own a non-profit, spend time one on one with people, but also know that they've build an orginization that helps many more.
