Which job is more dangerous?
Asked by tbodley74
Coal Mining job or working in some steel manufacturing plant? To me they both are just as dangerous where people can get accidentally killed on the job or permanent injury. I tried to debate with my mom that working at some steel plant using dangerous machinery is just as bad as going way deep in some coal mine. They both are equally dangerous to me. She insists I should work in a plant, but I had thoughts of going into the mine making even more money.

They both are very dangerous, but personally, I have more qualms about working at a steel manufacturing plant, because I am very fearful of heavy machineries. I've seen too many movies and documentaries where people accidentally get their arms and fingers cut off. On the other hand, coal mining accidents only happen once in a while, although when they do happen, they are usually fatal. If mining really brings in more money, I would go for the mining job. With today's technology, it's a lot safer to work the coal mines than it used to be.

A:
You are right, they are both very dangerous. Mining has some extra dangers, cave ins, drowning, explosions and is a job where the family always hopes the kids won't follow their fathers and brothers into. However, I have been in a steel manufacturing plant. Not all the jobs involve working right at the crucible. It is hot and loud but you don't get black lung or work for a company that will not shore up the mine properly so you have cave ins like we've seen recently.
