How do you become a software engineer?

I might want to be a software engineer when i grow up, how exactly do you become one? what do you get a university degree in? Do you need experenice as a programmer first?

Get a degree in computer science, then hope that they are hiring when you graduate. It's a global marketplace, and the salaries, while still good haven't increased in nearly a decade for software engineers. Employment prospects industry wide are good, but it depends on how many of those jobs will be available for US Citizens vs. H1B applicants. If you want to be a software engineer because you love the work, then go for it. But it's not easy or as profitable as it was in the past.
