college grad working @ a tanning salon... am i being too picky?
Asked by jesser
i graduated with a bachelors degree from a university and have no had success finding a "professional" job. so i just decided to apply to office and customer service positions, but since my town is tiny it's really hard to get a lot of the admin jobs.
i got called back for one of the resumes i sent in for a listing i found in the classifieds as a "customer service" position. when they called me in for an interview i found out it was for a family owned tanning salon. the family has no real business experience besides the past year of running the salon after buying it from its previous owners. they called me in yesterday and left a message on my voicemail saying i got the job and i needed to be in by 2pm for a very short meeting. really, no notice whatsoever it was just a short little procedures meeting... this short meeting turned into 5 hours and i'm not even sure i'm getting paid for it (QUESTION #1: is that legal?). not to mention i had to stay open an hour longer just so ONE person could come in and tan because apparently it's one of their family friends that can't make it in during normal business hours so we were told that whenever this lady decides to call, we have to be prepared to stay open an extra hour just for her.... which again, would probably never happen with a chain or corporate store/salon.
another thing, the job was advertised as customer service. come to find out their business is kind of slow and maybe a total of 10 people came in and tanned ALL day.. so she told us today that the majority of the job would be cleaning. wiping down beds, emptying trash, mopping the store, sweeping the store, vacuuming the store, washing down the walls, washing the windows, etc. and every shift has a different room that they must totally clean everyday.
now i understand that this is all a part of running a salon and things have to be clean. i guess it's just hard for me to swallow that i worked my butt off getting my degree and i'm working a job that is basically mostly janitorial. a part of me is wondering if i'm just overreacting and not giving it a chance and i'm just overwhelmed with all the cleaning duties since it was all packed into 4 hours????? also when i asked about scheduling and if they had any idea what my schedule would be like for the rest of the week she said "we have no clue we have to figure out what our schedules for our other jobs are looking like (the owners both have other jobs)". i had a bad experience in working for a small family owned business before (not getting paid on time, having to make special exceptions for their personal friends, etc) so i''m afraid this might be the same. my parents told me that its not worth it and that i should just call tomorrow and let them know it's not what i thought it was going to be and that i don't want the job.
but do i sound stuck up or like i think i'm too good for this job? keep in mind the job offers no benefits, i'm getting paid minimum wage, and they said they can't promise me anything over 10-15 hours a week. i just feel kind of lame that i have a 4 year college degree that i paid a lot of money for and that my coworkers are in high school...do i just need to suck up my pride and figure that hey its probably $60-70 a week that i wasn't making before? is it worth it? what would you do in my shoes?
