Brian
Is being bilingual really that great of an advantage for landing a job?
Asked by Brian
I am fluent in both English and Spanish and I'm a junior in college working on a chemistry major management minor. I have always been told that I have a great advantage but I really want to know if it's true.

It's an asset for sure. However if you are applying for a job in an environment where there are no Spanish speaking employees, customers, vendors etc that you will be interacting with, there it is not much of an asset to an employer to select you over a pure English speaking candidate. If for instance you are applying for a job in a cell phone call center where the likelihood is that there will be Spanish speaking customers then you would have two thumbs up compared to a pure English speaker. The same goes for a company that has non-English speaking employees that you would need to interact with on a regular basis. Does that make any sense? So, all in all it really depends on the type of job you would be doing and the environment. Hope that helps! Eve www.resumesbyeve.com

It could be a great advantage but it will depend on the position you are applying for as well as the company. Some companies could probably see the benefit easily while others may not. You definitely have an advantage but it's not really possible to say how great that advantage might be to you. I am jealous! I have always wanted to speak Spanish fluently. Good luck.
