Is it possible to become a retail store manager in the US? I'm from UK?
Asked by joediamond11
I have lots of experience in retail management from store manager to regional management and I would love to try my hand at see-ing what retail is like in the big apple. How would I go about it? Alec - I like your thinking!

You have an advantage that you may not be aware of, assuming that you have a European accent when speaking. American consumers will emotionally assign more credibility to a person with (for example) a British Accent. Attributed to the non- New Yorker with an accent are an assumption that they are well traveled, better educated, and as having an aire of class. If you've ever listened to an upper east coast American accent, you know that it can sound quite brusk. Many Americans from other parts of the country often find it somewhat irritating. Since New York can be said to be America's business center, it gets millions of visitors each year. They too find a British, Irish, and Scotish accents very pleasing to the ear. Any person that you would be being interviewed by for a retail position is no different than anybody else. There is an almost subliminal preference for individuals with an accent.
I hold the following degrees Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate. For nearly 30 years I served as CEO or CFO of several international firms.

You will need a work visa to be able to work in the US. Unfortunately, retail management is not high up on the list for H1 or temporary work visa holders as most of that are for tech workers. You will need to impress the management to sponsor your work visa. Your problem is that you don't have a work visa, which means you don't have a social security number Try visiting the US and applying to the retail companies. Some will not even entertain you because of your legal status, but if you are lucky to get into the interview process for some, make them really want you enough to sponsor you Good luck. It's not going to be easy, but it is doable
