Have just started a temp secretary assignment and I came in early (my first day)?
Asked by Poopsy
One of my supervisors said to me, "Well, as you're so early, you can start by changing the clocks on the walls" and she pointed to a small step ladder. I declined as I've been sent as a secretary, not maintenance. Do you think I was in the right?

Yes, you were correct. Some offices treat temps as "any job that needs doing" which is legally wrong - they cannot ask you to do things where you might be injured - as you have no insurance through them. You could tell them this is a nicely phrased way - making it clear that you are protecting their liability (as they would be at fault if you fell) This is usually in the rules in the temp agency contract. It's hard - you don't want to appear difficult or as if you won't take direction - but that request was out of line. Some managers just don't see temps as people. When I tempted there would always be "errands" and things - they would get annoyed that I would not do it - but it was not in my job description to run errands off site in my own car for them. I did the job they hired me for.

When I was temping, I was told to ring my agency if I wasn't sure about my duties. I'd advise you to do the same thing. They'll contact your employer and talk to them. And no, you shouldn't have to climb ladders and do other things like that. It's probably an OH&S violation for a start, so just say, politely, "No, I can't do that. But if you wait a minute, I'll ring the agency and check what their policy is".

A:
Yes. This isn't your job. Unfortunately, you're a temp, so you have few rights which you can enforce.

As long as you feel in the right that's all that matters. Maybe you shouldn't go straight onto y/a on your first day though!
