Auto Cad Operator questions, education, etc.?
Asked by kalli w
Can anyone give me any details on what its like, really like, being an AUTOCAD operator? Where I live there are very few but there are a few job openings. I am wanting to get an A.A.S in something that will get me into the door, however again, where I live, the schools don't offer much (maybe one or two classes on autocad and one or two on blueprint reading). I come from a very industry focused family I guess you could say, mechanics, truck drivers, etc, and I enjoy the work and know a lot about what goes on in those industries (or try to). Thanks so much.

I am an Mechanical Design Engineer and I could probably give you some advice and what to expect for: first of all you probably do not want to be just an AUTOCAD operator, since it is constraining you to a specific industry that only uses AUTOCAD and to be honest not too many companies still have AUTOCAD. If you want to become a CAD OPERATOR (notice is more general), I will recommend you to get an Associates Degree from a Community college, or a Technical Institute; there you will learn drawing standards, basic engineering standards (mostly for communicating with Engineers), and alot of 3D and 2D modeling using various software such as SolidWorks, Pro-E, AutoCAD etc.. i believe it depends on the school you go to. As a CAD operator you will be told what to do by an Engineer with markups, and as you get more experience you could eventually do your own basic mark ups. Other than that, in my opinion, it is an easy job; you just have to be good at working with computers very fast and efficient in order to succeed in moving up the ladder. I hope this helps, and Keep moving forward with you education; best of luck!
