What does the future hold for an Investment Banker working in Operations division?
Asked by wah tian heng
Hi. I have been offered a job in one of the biggest investment banks (which has weathered out this financial storm pretty decently), in Operations division. I am graduating may 2009 from university. I got this job because i did an internship there earlier. I am quite confused about the future opportunities for a person working in Operations division. Any experienced bankers, please help. Really appreciate it.

I graduated with two friends who are now investment bankers. I will not lie to you a career in investment banking at this stage of the game is very volatile, and I have even read publications stating that there my not be any investment banks left after this financial turmoil (not to say they will go out of business, but they will have to change their business plans and will not be technically considered investment banks anymore). As of now my friends still have jobs but that could change at any given moment, and I don't think any investment back has weathered this financial storm, it isn't even over yet. I would also consider the fact that a typical day from both of my friends has them arriving at work at 10AM and not leaving until 2AM everyday 6 days a week. It is a demanding but well paying job, and in an economic climate like this I would worry that all the hard work you would be doing would be for not if the job does in fact become obsolete. Proceed with caution, but an investment banking opportunity is something many people will never have in the end it is up to you.
