I was asked to resign my current job. How to I explain the situation to potential new employers?
Asked by goyo
The situation revolved around a legal issue that was there before I started. When I discovered it in my first week of employment, I dealt with it appropriately. Without going in to too much detail, an employee used forged documents to clear up the issue. When the forgery was discovered, I notified the CEO immediately. Now I am taking the fall for it.

If you really didn't do anything wrong, then I would start w/a lawyer. If your searching for a new job it's best to be as honest as you can. I would say that when you started you became aware of some legal issues that your employer didn't want to deal w/properly and since your are a person of moral and ethical standing you found that to remain in this job wouldn't be in the best interest of your view as a professional and law abiding citizen. How an employer takes this is dependent upon what your profession is, most HR people are aware of illegal things that get done at companies and know people do leave places for that reason. Honesty goes farther than try to cover something up. So be honest just leave out the part where they asked you to resign, you did resign that's not a lie, you just don't mention they asked you to do it. HR Manager
