Unfortunately the majority of the retail business does not pay well unless you're in a management position. I was a supervisor at the Canadian chain of Canadian Tire before starting my present career and I made next to little. Now that being said, there must be greater options in high end retail, such as Jewelry, Furniture ect. However I would recommend staying away from places such as Walmart, Target. With your education level, social work and maturity, I would think any retail store would welcome you with open arms. Good luck.

You would qualify to be an assistant manager at Target or Walmart making around $50,000/year to start. You would be "told" that you have a great chance of being store manager in 2 or 3 years, but at our age we know that is just not true.
I was told that, and I'm still an assistant manager after 4 years (I'm now 60). They look for qualified educated YOUNG people who will be with them for a long time to come. They say they don't discriminate, but every single person I've seen promoted to store manager or transferred in as store manager in my city in the past 4 years (and that's about 7 or 8) have been 30 years old or younger. Nobody my age has been promoted in this area since I've been here.
Retail is also physical work because much of the time (I don't care who you work for) there simply isn't the payroll to have enough people to get everything done. Payroll is the #1 controllable expense and it's the first thing to get cut when the profit isn't where it should be. Especially in today's poor retail economy. But the work still has to be done and you're the one to do it.
I average 10 to 12 hour days, 5 days a week.
