How can i get out of low paid retail work and into an office environment?
Asked by King Dedede
How can i break into that environment? I mean everyone wants EXPERIENCE. It's so frustrating because all i want is some money (i can't even afford a loaf of bread atm) and some useful expeience that can lead me onto bigger things. Does my retail experience mean i have to stick to retail and i have no chance of getting into an office environment? I'm not interested in call centres. Oh and i'm in the UK.

Well your best bet is to try for entry level positions and tailor your resume to highlight the skills and experience you have that would be useful in an office environment. If you have retail sales experience you have a lot of experience with people and customer service and working as a team. Framed for the right position, those are very valuable traits for an office worker. You might have to start at the bottom, but everyone does. Try to apply for basic positions that you are qualified for like file clerks, or receptionists (because receptionist have to answer phones and work with people). Some administrative positions do require a lot of experience because in large companies the assistants and receptionists are required to do A LOT. But when you search for job postings look at the list of required tasks for the job and the required skills. If you have some of those skills and have done similar tasks in a retail job, highlight those in your cover letter and resume. And be honest in your cover letter. There is nothing wrong with telling an employer that while you might not have direct experience in an office environment you have X amount of years working in retail and X, Y and Z skills from retail are why your experience is relevant to the job. Sell yourself! Good Luck!

I think it it takes hard work, consistantly good work. excellent work attendence record, and don't be afraid to make suggestions to your boss, without fear of looking like a butt kisser to your friends. also there are courses you can take at local trade schools (business courses)that take only about 6 to 8 wks. at your convenience. Good Luck! E ric S
