First day of my new job tomorrow. Help!?
Asked by Trent W
Now that we've got 3 months off from university - I managed to score myself an awesome part time sales job with David Jones (Australian department store). I'm working in small electrical/small appliance... I'm a bit nervous about my first day tomorrow! Everything so far has been so professional. I was thinking, who should I ask for when I arrive? There's a staff entrance with a security desk check in. I'm sure they don't know... I've dealt with a HR officer most of the time, so do I ask for him?! I don't wanna sound stupid. Any other tips too for getting over pre-work nerves!!! Thanks a bunch.

Sleep in and show up late. That's the best solution.

I say ask for the HR person.. that's what I've done whenever I started a job.. and if they're not available, explain that it's your first day. Congrats by the way :) Don't be nervous! The first day is always the easiest!!

From my own experience starting my first real job a month ago... yes, do ask for the HR officer, and make sure you ask them questions. If possible try in advance to think through what a regular day at work would mean. If there is anything you are unsure about, do ask! e.g. Where to park your car if you bring one, whether you need to sign in and out, dress code, lunch break (and other breaks), any special days or where something out of the norm happens (perhaps casual Friday, etc), important extension numbers, who to ask if any equipment you deal with breaks down, keys, fire exits... anything at all! Existing staff tend to take for granted the things that new staff won't necessarily know. So it's important to find out anything you're not sure about as soon as you can, and ask nicely :) I'm sure other people will have lots of advice covering other aspects of a new job, so take heed and good luck!
