Is it true about RN transfer from a nursing home to a hospital?
Asked by bear4
I've heard in the past that once you obtain your RN and start out at a nursing home and later try to get on at a hospital, that they basically spit on your application due to the simple fact that you haven't been exercising your nurse training and education. Is this true?

Not as much anymore because depending on what kind of nursing home you are applying, you could have more acute patients. Nursing homes that are also rehabilitation centers are getting more complex patients. So nurses are required to utilize more of the skills they were trained for. I would ask the DON, or HR Manager in the interview, about the types of patients they are taking. If you want to keep your skills sharp, stick with a nursing center that has a rehab unit.

No. But it's best to start your career in a hospital. Most places want you to have at least 1 year training in the hospital setting.
