How to network yourself to apply for a nonprofit organization out of state ?
Asked by Searcher's Curious Account
I live in an area of the country with almost a 10% unemployment rate, and I have several family members in a 3.1% unemployment rate. I checked that state's job service and there were almost 800 jobs I qualified for. A vast difference from the 3-4 jobs per that is around here. What are some specific tips you can provide me on networking for employment in a job market several states away. Due to finances, I cannot travel out there on a consistent basis.

Remote networking is very hard to do. You need to build up email addresses of the people who work for that company. Also, try to find other organizations they're in partnership with. Be careful to tell them your situation and you cannot afford travel. The down side of this is some companies might want a demonstration of leadership in how to get out of tough situation. NPOs really want to see this kind of motivation because they do not have an excess of money or 'profit bank' to draw off of. Motivated and inventive people are cornerstones to NPOs and volunteer industries. See if you can get friends or family to be in contact with people who work for the company and see if they can do some leg work for you. Have them use the terms 'indisposed' or "has a full planer" for reasons you cannot come out there for networking. In turn, fill up your planer to come up with ways to get money to go out there for "face time" and serious networking. Anyway, good luck and keep knocking on those doors, even if you have to move.
