What will getting a certificate in Computer Information Technology do for me, if anything? ?
Asked by short_reed
I am looking into changing professions and I have a strong base of computer knowledge. Taking a look at what is available out there and limitations on money, would this cert do anything for me?

Certifications alone do absolutely nothing for you. It is your goals and desires that matter. If you want to pursue a career in the computer field then do it. The certificate will only enhance it.

My pc support dept at Mobil was 35 people in 1999. That same dept at ExxonMobil is now 4 people.
PC support is not my idea of a good paying and stable job anymore.
I was doing pc/mac support from 1981. Every time I thought of getting certs for it, I came across lots of young people making half as much as me.

A Certificate in Computer Information Technology, Is a very generic certificate. You should look into getting specialized in other words, look into the MCSE Certification. This is a cert that will get your foot in most doors, then you can decide where you want to go from there. Networking, Systems Administration etc etc Check this site out

Also the salaries are pretty good as well
