Can i get a career with Autocad on its own?
Asked by petek87
Ive just recently passed the City & Guilds Autocad course in 2D, but im struggling to find a job that just requires that qualification on its own. What other qualifications would i need, how long would it take and how much might it cost?? Thanks for any advice. Pete

A 2D AutoCAD course isn't enough to land you a career, probably not even a serious job, until you get some theory to back up your skills with knowledge about a particular subject. And believe me, that stuff's important. The only place I can think of that might hire you off the bat, is maybe a local council office. Other than that you'll need to refine your skills into one area. Architectural and Engineering (there are many disciplines of this) drafting careers are pretty much entirely CAD, so you might want to look into those. You will still need to do a course so you can learn the subject matter relative to your pursuit though. It would take between 2 to 4 (and for some courses 6) years fulltime to get the qualifications. -However, sometimes a local firm might pick you up to work under a supervisor doing CAD work before you're even finished your first year. They will often also pay for your course so you can do it part time, and eventually gain your accreditation. I can't really give you more info other than what is the international standard, because I don't know how the industry is regulated where you are, what employers require, or even where you are in the first place. Best place to ask is careers guidance counsellors at local Universities (say you might be interested in a drafting course, depending on where it will get you and how much it is), or inquire with a drafting or engineering firm about what it takes to get there. They should all point you in the precisely right direction happily, and maybe help you get there. Good luck with whatever you make of your life mate -Cowboy.
I'm studying an Advanced Diploma that spans the Architecture, and design, and construction technology fields.
