What qualifications are needed to become a paralegal?
Asked by C.R
I would like to know how best to get a position as a paralegal in a small London firm. What experience and qualifications are needed? Where is best to look? Is it best to use the internet or contact them personally? Thanks a lot.

Employers may insist on either a law degree or a paralegal qualification from the Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX), the National Association of Licensed Paralegals or the Institute of Paralegals. No previous experience is required. For para legal jobs in London , visit the following sites:- www.gumtree.com/ www.simplylawjobs.com/ www.jobrapido.co.uk/ london.craigslist.co.uk/ www.londoncareers.net/ Best of Luck !!

You would probably at least need a certificate or a two year degree. And face to face contact, or at least the phone, is always better.

In the US, the qualifications are experience (the most important) and education. More employers here are looking for formal education, but many paralegals have no education, but lots of experience. I believe that education is going to take more of a role, as the field is getting explored more and more. Here, it is best to have at least 2 years of experience and education from an American Bar Association approved school. Some employers require Bachelor degrees in any field. Excellent speaking and writing skills, time-management, people skills-all essential. You should probably send your resume to the offices in which you are interested. A lot of places here will advertise, but some do not. Knowing someone helps you get a job here many times. If you do not have legal experience, highlight the applicable skills you do have. A well-written letter and resume will be necessary. Here, smaller firms often promote people as they gain experience. GOOD LUCK!

The requirements to be a paralegal in London are probably much different than the requirements in the United States. In the U.S., some states require a certification while others do not. England may require a certification or something similar. You are going to have to do some research on it.
