How often does an RN or Registered Nurse have to retest or re certify?
Asked by braveheart_10010
NCLEX test again? Continuing education? What is required? I am working toward my degree, but plan on continuing my day job and working as a nurse as well, so want to see what time committed is needed after completion of the degree.

Once you are a nurse you have to re-apply for your license every 2 years, your Board of Registered Nursing will send you a notice in the mail. In order to get your license you have to prove that you have completed 32 Continuing Education Units(CEUs) over the past 2 years- There are many opportunities to complete these hours, via the internet, your hospital, conferences, magazines, etc. However, the very first time you reapply for your license you don't have to prove you completed 32 hours of CEUs because they figure your first two years are all learning experiences anyway. Once you pass the NCLEX you never have to take it again! Hope I helped
PS- This is for America, more specifically California. I would check with your state's BRN for specifics.

The nice thing about NCLEX is that it is only a one time deal. After you pass it, you will obtain your license in your state.
You will renew your license every 2 years, but each state has different requirements. Not only in number of CEU's but even in classes that must be taken.
If you are lucky enough to belong to a state that participates in the compact license (Only about 20 or so do right now), you can work in a reciprocal state on your home license, no need to get the other states license.
This works well for those who are travelers or who live close to the border of another state and wish to work in both.
You will need to consult with your licensing board to make sure you are up to date on their requirements. Here is a list for all of the states boards.
