And how often does it need replacing? By the time you take equipment out of your salary, maybe it doesn't pay as well as it first appears and that is why there is a shortage of welders in this field.

Good equipment is not cheap. But well worth it. I'd speak to the people you are going to be working with and see what in particular "type" of gear you will need for the upcoming work assignments. Indoor/Outdoor .... just get the right stuff and spare nothing on the helmet. Hopefully, you can write this all off as well.
