What certification or degree might I consider for becoming a construction safety director?
Asked by J V
I have been a safety director for my dad's company for about 6 years, but I would like to move on into an independent position. Any suggestions on where to start and what education I would need?

As for being a director unless you have a degree with tons of experience it would be hard to land that position, and if you did 'land' it what benefit would the employees get from you being the safety director.
If you have not had any of the OSHA training courses that would be a start the 10 & 30 hr for construction. Look at your local community college as they would have some occupational training opportunities. THere are several grants available for training (Susan G. Harwood, lots of departments FF-PD have OSHA training all the time-ask to attend)
Look at getting an advanced degree or advanced certification that demonstrates your knowledge. CCHEST offers the CHST (Construction Health and Safety Technician) certification if you are a non-degree holder, the parent organization BCSP of course offers the ASP/CSP (Associate Safety Professional/Certified Safety Professional) for those that have an Associate in Safety or a Bachelor in any subject. If you need to further your education there is Columbia Southern University that is accredited and is solely online, or there is several other 'brick and mortatr' schools that offer a Occupational Safety curriculum.
Hope this helps
