I am a case manager and I work with people who have mental illness(es). My job pays okay, but I get my reward out of seeing the client's grow. When I was younger my career was all about the money for me, now it is about going home at night knowing I made a difference in someone's day...that I made a difference period. Job satisfaction is more important to me than money. Yes, we all need money to live, especially the way things are in the world now, but as I said, I learned that I do not need as much money or things as I thought. Job satisfaction is what satisfies me. Follow your heart as far as a career is concerned.

I would be EXTREMELY hesitant to get involved in any business funded by the government and medicaid at this time. In FL 50% of the funding is state and 50% is feds. FL is facing a huge 2.5 billion dollar deficit. They have cut private case managers for developmentally disabled. The only way I would consider it is from the state hospital or the medicaid HMOs which have a vested interest in making things happen and jail diversion programs. In Illinois they just cut small group homes after not paying them for months. The way the economy is every social services program is going to have to show a cost benefit to survive. Mental health centers typically have large administrative overhead and case management has always been considered the cash cow to support the agency. Some states like FL have privatized many services for children, some are run by sheriff's departments but most are run the Children's Home Society of Florida.
