Careers in the medical technology lab field?

I'm thinking about careers in the medical field, especially related to lab work, the one being most familiar with a medical technologist. What are some other similar careers and what are some ups/downs of them? What is a career in a medical lab like?

Most of these jobs are low-paying and boring. But they are steady work in dismal economic times. The only employers are hospitals. Try to become a Registered Nurse. That has some wonderful opportunities and you could still be a lab tech..
