What is a typical day as a Machinist/CNC person?
Asked by dj
Are you at a desk all day or are you on your feet? Is it a fun job? Is there a future in the field? Is the pay good? thx

A machinist is on his feet all day. It can be a very interesting job, or a very boring one, depending on where you work. If you work in a production shop, you are basically making the same thing over and over. If you work in a specialized shop, you are constantly doing different things. The pay can range from minimum wage for operators to excellent ($80,000 +) for precision model shop machinists. As for a future, there are fewer and fewer good machinist out there. For someone willing to put in the time and effort, there can be a very good future. Younger folks, tend to not want to do the manual labor type work. Based on what I see, the average age of a good machinist is probably 40+.
