I think it is the norm to hire young attractive females to be receptionists simply because that is the first person the client sees when they walk in the door. I don't think I've ever seen a male receptionist however I did work in an office where there was a male admin assistant which for some reason made the male executives quite uncomfortable.

Why, you don't think guys can be fun and outgoing? It means they want a receptionist who will make people feel welcome and happy to be there. It doesn't imply they're only looking for a woman. It is illegal to discriminate based on gender when hiring for most jobs. Granted, there are more female receptionists, but that's because most guys don't apply for those jobs. As for accounting, everyone starts at entry level, so that means both male and female people.
