Asked by WBNY ♥
a lawyer, or something with a degree in communications [I was thinking maybe advertising/marketing]?
This is in California by the way. I don't live there yet but I am planning on moving to study there in a year or so.

Be careful with elementary teaching-many states do NOT have openings for general elem. teachers. There are way too many people looking. In my state, the schools are getting over 500 resumes when they post an ad for one elem. job. It really is that bad in many states. If you want to teach, specialize in math or science. Those are your best bet. I have met people who live in CA who cannot find elem. jobs, and others who had no problem. Most people think there is a teaching shortage in the USA and it is such a joke. It is only for certain subjects in certain parts of certain states. And as far as pay, teachers in my state make good money in the public schools. In addition to elem., History, English, PE and Art are all hard jobs to find, sometimes impossible. In my state, you get a teaching job only if you know someone in a school. Very political. If you truly want to teach, you have to be willing to move to the jobs. If you are, then you will have a much easier time.
I have a BA in Communications, graduated at the top of my class. It is a worthless degree for the most part. If you want to go into advertising or marketing, make sure you take those specific classes and do an internship while in college. Also, expect to start out doing entry-level work at low pay. The problem with a Communications degree is that it is too broad-employers want specific skills.
As for law, I think there is always a need for lawyers. Just make sure it is something you can commit to.
Take some time to check out different majors, and then look into the job market for each one. Talk to friends and family, do not listen only to college advisers and profs because they lie like rugs to get your $.

Teachers in the U.S have very, very low salaries. If you want to become a teacher you're better off in Canada. So, you're probably better off in communications or law if you've got our heart set on California.

I would go in the school direction. We will always need teachers - job security! You need it in this day and age.

Do start counting the chickens before they hatch - stay in school.....
My wife teachers Calc/Alg/Treg to 11th and 12th graders - in Spanish.
She worked for 4ys to get her degree in Math. Then another 3yrs to get her Masters plus 90. She's been teaching - now on her fourth year earning $69k a year. She is at the top of her pay grade for time teaching.
Basically teaching math - you can get a job easily. My wife is teaching kids in Spanish - she can get a job any where she wants......
She did it through online schools - you can too.....
