Hey, I think they mean the same thing, you got to agree with me when i say that automotive technician sounds better lol;
well depends really if you are in the usa or canada well they are not doing soo great because of the economic crises; in fact i might say not going well at all even if you were not in north america, it is sort of a ripple effect so,

I can only answer based on knowledge as my husband is a "auto technician.
The difference from mechanic vs. auto tech...is experience and ASE certified.
Salary varies: mechanic probably 9-12.00/hr no benefits no union
vs. tech around $24.00/hr w/benefits and union and determines where you live.
Last but not least owning own shop probably more hrs to work, less money till established.
