Career Questions and Answers

Newt
(Emergancy Personel only please) do I need to change my career?
Asked by Newt
I am 22 not amazingly fit but I am working at it. I am a security guard for a gated community on the midnight shift and am taking online classes for criminal justice I would like to be a police officer. I struggle with online classes because I don't feel as if I am learning I just read and restate what I just read. Recently while working late I got a call of an emergency a resident has had a heart attack. I have never dealt with such an ordeal I was in the room when my grandfather died who did not want resuscitation but when I arrived on scene all I could see was my grandpa passing on. When I got there the man was unconscious so I hooked up the AED and instantly got to work after 10 mins of CPR the gentleman started not gasping but gurgling. Which once again reminded me of how my gramps died but the family took this has him fighting for life and a good sign so I ran with that thought more for morale purposes. I gave him 4 more days in ICU and enough time for family to say goodbyes but all I can think of is was I fast enough, did I do something wrong, and could I have saved my grandpa. I don't think I can handle this for the rest of my life does it get easier? should I look into other options?

You will be wondering for the rest of your life. It will get easier as you get older because you will be able to understand how someone thinks when they get old. The thinking is completely different from when you are young. If Grandpa honestly did not want resusitation, then he made his choice. YOu might have felt worse if you resusitated him and he lived on for many years in a coma. Life is full of mysteries. If you are asking if you should be an EMT, i say yes..

When you do your best, that is all you can do. If you become a police officer you will deal with many more critical situations; gun shots, stabbings, car accidents, amputations, etc. I have learned in life sometimes things happen for a reason, to get us to turn around and go in another direction. Most cities have a One Stop Center or Careen Center, you should go there and talk to a counselor. They will be able to give you some suggestions as to what career would meet your needs. There is no charge for any of their services, and they have everything at one location. Job bulletins from all over the US, computers, workshops, fax machines, counselors, etc.
