Should I give my bonus back?
Asked by CldHansWrmHrt
I received a bonus and a small raise. I have a job interview scheduled for the next day and may get the job. If I get the job, should I give the bonus back? The raise is not scheduled to take place for another month.

no, it was not for future service, it is for past service. the bookkeeper has already made the entries and you must keep it.

A:
No! You worked hard and earned the bonus. You are getting the bonus for the past year, not the next year.

Your bonus was given for the time worked. The raise is for the future. The bonus belongs to you, the raise does not as it is for the future.

why would you do that? you obviously earned it :)

Heck no! Bonuses are usually give for work completed, not for what you will do in the future... You earned it, so spend wisely... Just hope that it's not an enrollment in the jelly of the month club!

A:
No, the bonus is for recognition of past work completed. It is just to show approval for work well done. They could hardly give you a bad reference if they have given you a bonus can they? Accept it with good grace. They may be disappointed if you leave, but so would you be if you were made redundant - Such is life.

A:
You should keep it. The bonus was for your work you did in 2008 - ie. work you've already done. So you've earned it. I mean, if you had left your job a month earlier, you wouldn't even have gotten your bonus.... And your job wouldn't feel guilty. So neither should you. Keep it and feel good about it.

No, you received the bonus and the raise for prior work, not the work that you could possibly do in the future. It is a reward for the work that you have done, not an incentive for work to be done.

A:
Bonuses and raises are to reward your work and loyalty. You got the bonus for what you did not what your going to do. If you decide to leave, that doesn't mean you shouldn't keep the rewards for your work.
I say your fine keeping it.

No, it is a bonus for past work not an incentive for future work. You did the work, you get the bonus. Buy something new for the new job!!! :)

Instead of feeling guilty try looking at it for what it is:
You are given a bonus based on past performance. Therefore, it is a reward for work already done, it's not a persuasion to convince you not to seek out other employment. Obviously, if you are seeking out other employment it is because you are unhappy where you are for some reason or other regardless of any bonuses. And if the job has made you so grossly unhappy then you should feel that the bonus is less than you deserve.
Maybe I speak from personal experience only. I was a very good worker at my former job, I even took on the jobs of two other people when they left and I asked both time for a raise and wasn't worth one and when my bonus came it was pittance. I found this insulting to say the very least. Naturally when I finally did leave he had to pay 4 people to do the 3 jobs I was doing when I left - just so you get an idea of what I was handling.
Being the better person doesn't always pan out. Take what little got outta the place and keep going.

Well in most places a year end bonus would be based on your (or the companys) performance for the year that is finishing not the year that is coming up. If that is the case it is a bonus that was already earned and giving it back would be like giving back the salary you earned there this year.

A:
No, the bonus is based on the work you have already done. You don't owe it back.

A:
The bonus is meant for the work you did already. It would be unfair for them to expect you to return it because you are leaving them.
Answered by abstractview
A:
No. The bonus is in appreciation of work done in the past, not an expectation of future work (although it is supposed to be an incentive to get a bonus next year). You're under no obligation to return it if you leave.

Are you crazy????!!!! Keep it...you deserve it for all the hard work you did for them.

A:
What was the bonus for? If is was an X-Mas type bonus for the past year then keep it. If it was an incentive to stay then the waters become more murky.
Answered by Arch Angel of Helm
A:
No, it is yours to keep for the work you've completed to date. Don't worry about the raise - if you get the new job, the raise won't ever happen. But definitely keep the bonus.
