Not really. I worked in the automotive business as an auditor; got laid-off twice this year. It would be good for exposure, but not as a life long career. Some are salaried, I have met technicians and foremans that make $30, $40 dollars an hour. You can always get the experience for a few years, go become a service advisor then a service manager. But, I tell you, some of the guys that I have met in my career are miserable, but their pay is really good. You just gotta remember, when more pay comes, more stress comes.

First off, Realize that auto technicians are rarely paid in salary. Often enough, techs work over 60 hours each week and only get paid for the amount of hours that the job should take. Also, while working in dealerships, warranty jobs pay less than the job should pay. The best salary positions for a tech would be to work for a company that has a fleet and do maintenance on those vehicles (post office, comcast, energy company).
Second, all technicians I know are telling the younger techs to get out while they can, get a new career and new education before they get sucked into the job.
Third and most important. Do what you love. If you will not be happy working a boring 9-5 job, then do not consider it. My advice is that doing what you love is the most important thing in order to want to go to work in the morning. Beware, the automotive business is slow and shaky, but if it is what you love... go for it.
Please keep in mind, an auto tech is a continuing education (due to new technology) and a rough job. If you don't mind permanent dirt embedded in your skin, often minor burns, and countless cuts and dings that you don't know where they came from... go for it.

The auto business is just like any other business, there are plenty of opportunities for good people and lots of room for advancement. The high line cars require more talented technicians and the pay reflects this. Our society and economy is dependent upon the ability to move about and the automobile is the mode of transportation. It may evolve to alternative power systems but will remain for the foreseeable future.
