Why is ITT-Technical Institute often looked down upon?
Asked by nobody knows me now
I have a two year degree from ITT Technical institute. Upon receiving my degree I was able to find good technician jobs. But I was worried the whole time about not finding one, based off blogs I've read and discouragement from other students. I've seen many students graduate from there with a BS even and not even get a job in the field or end up working as assemblers or something. I could never understand why. I have had a history of jobs. But I kind of messed it up for my self and hope to clean it up.
My history:
Beckman Coulter: (Electron Assembler) worked here for six months before I got my degree and being a student of about 1 year..
Hosa Technology: (Engineer Assistant) was a very good job that payed very low..I still didn't have my degree..it paid about 11/hr..but it was very good experience.. I had crazily abandoned it due to misguidance and discouragement and a lack of confidence...worked here for six months
Lanny Electronics (13/hr) Another good job repairing car stereos to componenet level..irresponsibly abadoned this one too..due to a broken heart from an ex-girlfriend and depression.."Irresponsible..I know..worked here for 8 months
Newport Medical Instruments(Electronic Assembler/Technician) $15 per hour....was a good job if I were interested in Biomed--left this job for an RF Tester Technician opportunity that I saw on Careerbuilder after working here for about 10 months
My current company($17/hr) RF tester/technician...been here for a year...
I'm still currently pursuing my Bachelors through ITT...
My ultimate goal is to be an engineer, which I have witnessed at least three people that I know personally become....
actually 6..three of them work for Broadcom
one for Powerwave..
and One for a small company
I've seen many students with a better history then mine get jobs starting off at $18-22/hr
so as you can see, I've found many jobs, and have had many interviews in between..which means I was given plenty of chances...
So why is the school looked so down upon?
And based off my history..due you think it would be difficult for me to find an engineering job?

I think it is looked down upon because it seems like one of those fake colleges you see advertised on tv. There is a college here that teaches you things like paralegal skills and it costs $17,000 a year to go there but if you go to the local community college to learn these skills it is only $1600 a semester. I think people think that ITT is one of those places. It sounds like you are getting good experience out of your degree and you shouldn't let people get you down about it. You have been gainfully employed and it matters more what you experience is than where you went to college.

Well, I've actually heard many good things about ITT Technical Institute, though I think a lot of online colleges get a bad rap. My brother, who is a tech at his local college said that he hated using an online format for going to school, so he called it a waste of money for himself...but he always tells people who don't have time for traditional college to give it a try because I've done better at online school than anyone ever expected.
You also have to look at the calibre of people who are complaining about their lousy experiences. Maybe they expected that, by attaining a degree, the job would "fall in their laps" and did nothing to prepare themselves for the post graduation job search. A degree is helpful, of course, but just having the degree won't "land" you a great job, as you also need to be aware of your grade/skill level and you have to know the job prospects. Computer jobs are more difficult to attain than many other professions because of the ease of outsourcing this type of work. In other words, these people might not have had the resources or drive to find work. Some schools offer guaranteed placement, and the complainers might have been expecting this. I've learned to never trust a school that offers a guaranteed job...now offering a guaranteed list of prospective employers is believable, but not a job. Finally, some people just complain out of their own misery. They see their friends gaining better, and poke fun at places like this because they're afraid that they are failures for not having the same success that other graduates have. Since you have your own success, and know people who have succeeded, you know the truth about the school, and obviously so do a lot of companies who hire its graduates. Just ignore the complainers and know they're wrong.
If you know people who have the job you want, your best bet is to ask them if your education/work history will help or hinder your job search.
