I work at a vet as an unlicensed vet tech is there any way I can get a license without taking classes?
Asked by Erin
If i have worked there long enough and i know all the things that a vet tech needs to know, can i get a license without having to take the two year program, is there like just a test that you can take without taking the program? Thanks!

You have to pass the national and state boards to become licensed. I don't know if you're allowed to take the without going to school or not, but don't expect to be tested on placing catheters and shooting X-rays. It'll be a lot of stuff that you probably don't need in your day to day job. There will be stuff about chemistry, biology, pharmacology, biochemistry as well as diseases, and such about all species. So, if you work in a small animal clinic you might do ok on the stuff about dogs, but what do you know about pigs? cattle? horses? If you think you can pass go for it, but don't count on it. Here's the website for the national boards.

Try going to a school which offers the program and see if you can test out. This would allow you to take the final exams without taking the classes. Note: You may have to pay the tuition for the course.

The way to start the process is find out who gives the exam. If it is a State office, then go to that State's office website and see what it takes to become licensed. If it isn't a state, but a company then go to the company's website.
