Is becoming an architectural drafter a good career move?
Asked by MakeWay27
I am 27 yrs old and I do not have a college education. I have always been interested in Real Estate and Architecture and I was toying with the idea of going to school to learn drafting. I am in sales now and I am really unhappy and want to find a career a bit more rewarding and creative. Is there room for advancement for a person who just goes to school to become a drafter? Any insight would be highly appreciated!

It is definitely possible to earn a living being a drafter/designer. If you desire to be a pure drafter, the only way to make money is through volume of work. Most of those jobs are being done overseas at a quarter the US rate. There are a few challenges for any drafter/designer. You need to establish credibility and contacts. Since there are more incompetent than good designers in the market, your reputation needs to be flawless. Since projects normally take up to several years from design to finish of construction, it takes a lot of time to establish contacts. What people are looking for is someone who can under promise and over deliver.
