How can I get started with a career as a project manager?
Asked by sacking24
I don't have any experience in project management but I just graduated with a MBA and I have a graduate certificate in project management. I am eligible and have applied to write the CAPM exam with PMI. I can't secure a job in my field because I don't have actual job experience. How can I get my foot in the door and work towards my PMP certification?

Thats hilarious... Okay I will give you the real answer. You dont walk out of college and take over a project management position. Most project managers work years in every field they manage before they become a project manager. They just dont hire some dude off the street and say, okay you have a nice degree tell these 20 people what to do. When you have to go to the people and say "what do you do?" Lets say you want to be a project manager and there are 4 vital team members that you will manage. Expect to do each of their jobs for at least a year before you even qualify. So pick the first job on the list, be the best at that job and move to the next, after you are the best in those 4 vital areas you will be recruited as a project manager. Ill give you an example. I was hiring a guy that was really cocky and had a 4.0 in college. I said want are you looking for. He said I dont have to start as VP. But maybe a job like yours. I said ive worked here for years and you think you can do my job? He said I have my degree. I said that gets you in the door. And now you can leave. I hired for fortune 500 companies. Walking out of college you will not ever start as a manager over a *real* job that you dont have experience in. They will take that janitor that worked for them for 20 years over you. You have enough degrees, start working. I dont care if you get your PHD. They still wont make you a project manager until you have worked in the field. Go get a job and some experience. If you are the cream you will rise to the top. If you cant handle it, then you can go back and teach. Just calling it like it is.
