How many hours can a full time employeer cut you?
Asked by ompie
I work for a large corportation and due to the economy they are cutting back our hours to 30 per week. Can they do that? What is the least amount of hours they can cut you? I want to know my rights as a full time employee I live in New York State.

If your hours are reduced for any reason, you could be considered "underemployed". How this affect you depends specifically around if your job is part of a labor union or contract, or if you are considered "work at will". Without this specific information, it is very difficult to give you direction on your employment rights. The link below takes you directly to the NYS department of labor - wage and hour laws
If you are a work at will employee, your hours can be cut to zero.
If you are contracted or part of a union, they have bargained your wage and hour agreement for you.

If you are not represented by a union and are not employed under a contract that specifies the a minimum number of hours you must be paid for you have no rights. An employer can tell you the job is 40 hours per week or 8 yours per week or anywhere in between. As long as you get paid for every hour you work including any over 40 the employer is within the law. The law specifies no minimum number of hours and does not differentiate between the phrases full-time or part time with respect to worker rights.

Sure they can - they could cut you to zero if they wanted to. At some point you'd be able to collect unemployment.
Good luck.
