What is the fastest way to obtain an RN degree for someone who already has a BS?
Asked by AEM
I have a BS in chemistry and would like to become an RN. What would be the fastest way to do this? I know that there are accelerated BSN programs that take about one year, but what about accelerated RN programs? If a BSN program confers an RN degree along the way, then that would be an option, but I'm not sure that it does, nor do I particularly want another bachelor's degree if it is not needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know it sounds weird by try your local community college. Since they usually specialize in certificate programs, and associate degrees they usually have lots of options on how to obtain your RN. Good Luck!

I am sort of in the same boat as you. I graduated with a BA in psychology, but want to become an RN. I am taking classes at my local community college to get an AA in Nursing. Since I took many of the needed classes as a psychology major, I would only need about 7 more courses (this will take me about 4 semesters - as the classes go in a sequenced order.) I am not sure if you have taken any of these classes, but most of these are musts for someone interested in nursing: Anatomy & Physiology I and II Intro to Psych Abnormal Psych Lifespan/Dev. Psych Intro. Sociology As a chem major, I am not sure if you had to take any of the above. So, you might have to complete them as well as the nursing classes. I would look into local community colleges and see what their specific requirements are. Another option that I am looking to is a BSN advanced. It is for people that already hold a college degree. These programs are often demanding. They take about 1.5 - 2 yrs. They might be a little more expensive (that's why I am sticking to community college), but you get another B.S. -- oppose to an A.A. However, there are lists of classes you will probably need to complete, before getting accepted into one of these programs. Many of these courses I listed above (but they may require additional science couses.) You need to research different schools and then decide whether you want an AA in Nursing or a second B.S. And find out what each program's requirements are.

There are a bunch of BS to BSN programs around. I know in Denver there is a great one at Regis University, but that is here, it depends on your location. If you have an ASN or a BSN you get your RN, if you go to LPN courses (3 yr) then you will be a LPN.

there are quite a few schools that offer an accelerated BSN (baccalaureate of science in nursing) degree for students who already have a BS. all of these programs are quite rigorous and generally last 12-18 months. drexel's program is only 11 months long, it's the shortest in the nation!!! baccalaureate programs usually make the most sense because they provide a more realistic career change that can be made without having to enroll in a 2-year associate degree program, a 3-year diploma program, or go the full four years in a traditional baccalaureate program. A 2-year associate degree or 3-year diploma in nursing usually won't enable you to attend graduate school. however, if you have a BS in addition to a 2-year associate degree or 3-year diploma in nursing you may be able to attend some graduate schools (however, you have to really look for them and once you find them they may not be conveniently located). here's a link to all the accelerated bsn programs accredited by the aacn: http://www.aacn.nche.edu/Education/pdf/APLIST.PDF best of luck
