Career Questions and Answers
I really want this job as a sales associate at a fitness place but how should I go about it?
Asked by Trisha T
Im unemployed right now and nothing would make me happier then landing this job at a local fitness facility as a sales associate. I was contacted for an interview for tomorrow evening and the guy who called claims there is much money to be made and they will be opening new facilities nearby for more commision on new members. The only set back is that I am overweight. BUT I NEED THIS JOB! I do believe this would really help me with my career since I am about to recieve another degree in business. My sales skills are impecable and I have been in the field forever. Wouldnt it be less intimidating for a woman of size to try and get you to join. I mean I heard like 75% of all americans are overweight. Well I know I would be more likely to join if I knew I wasnt going to be the only fat one there. And Im not extremely fat, like the size of Rosie'O Donnell or a little smaller. Does anyone know anything I can add in this embarrasing interview to land this job. I would be required to attend 3 excercise classes every week in order to keep the job and feel as if I need this to pursue my career to the fullest potential. I have to eventually get in shape and this would be the perfect oppurtunity. Please let me know what you think I might be able to just throw in there during the interview process that may make me look better. They say you cant hire based on looks but everyone knows an ugly girl doesnt land the job at Hooters for instance, they will take the interview but not the applicant. PLEASE HELP I NEED THIS JOB (PS, keep in mind I am a great sales person)
Thanks for all your help

Express what you have said here........why it would be the perfect opportunity for you. I belong to a fitness center and there are some overweight associates so be encouraged.

I think if your sales skills are impeccable (as you claim) you should be able to sell yourself
You should be able to demonstrate your sales skills in the interview

there must be many other guys, they also keep in mind every minutes they need this job, but the answer is depend on the interviewer, so my advice is:
1. try your best to learn about the job in need before interview, as detail as u can, and prepare fully for that, that's real attention. everybody includes the boss like that.
2. take it easy while interviewing, just exploit and present your long suit, enhance your common skills and try to "share", avoid or mitigate your risky shortcoming(if there's any) with all candidates. And that's enough.
Wish you can pass the interview.

I would think your sales ability would be more critical than your weight. In fact, your weight could be an asset if properly presented. You could better relate to potential members since most come to lose weight and get in shape. You could also chart your progress in losing weight or getting in shape and use that in your sales presentation to prospects. I am sure that everyone who has applied for this position isn't "buff."
