When going for a job interview,as a home health aide, would it help me to dress for the job?
Asked by Moonchild
In other words, should I wear scrubs(as opposed to a pantsuit, for instance). I am asking this because some woman who is supposed to be an expert on the subject of successful job interviews says that you should dress for the position you are applying for. Serious answers only, please.

Actually you are supposed to dress just a little better than the job. For example if they wear jeans, you wear khakis. If you came to me for an interview in scrubs, I would assume you just came from work and would ask you if you were still employed. If not, I would be surprised. Most home health aides come for an interview in nice pants and a top and I have interviewed them. I am looking for clean hands with shorter nails so you won't be stabbing the patients. Those long talons are a no no in that field. I am looking for neat hair and a well groomed appearance. I like someone who smiles and is pleasant because then the patients will like her. I like someone who comes with a resume. Take your facial piercings out for the interview (ear piercings are ok), my elderly clients will complain about that.

Kadel says it best. Generally speaking, you DO NOT wear scrubs to a healthcare position interview. It is still a formal job interview, after all. The "dress the part" saying relates to business/IT/etc. where it's always suggested that you dress "one up" to your current position. For example, if all of the mangers in your department wear suits, you'd better be in a suit. The one exception to the scrubs rule is if they will have you demonstrate your skills on the floor, start work that day, etc. But as far as I know, these would be exceptions, not the rule. They would likely ask that your bring a change of clothes to the interview. Wear a casual suit if you have one, or black pants and a white collared top with a sport coat if you have one. If not, dress pants and a buttoned collared shirt should be OK. Basically, you want to look professional, at minimum "business casual". NO JEANS or T-SHIRTS. Go neutral on the makeup, perfume, etc. Just be sure to make eye contact and seem sincere about really wanting the job. Make sure you have done some research and know what the job is about. Bring all of your educational transcripts, references, criminal records check, etc. with you. It gets the ball rolling and makes it seem easier to hire you. Good luck!
