Perhaps you don't understand what a sales manager does. A sales manager has sales representatives report to him/her. It is the sales manager's job to assist the sales representative in attaining their sales goals by helping them close sales, negotiate contracts, assist with customer retention and find new sales opportunities. You can't do those things without having been a sales representative. So, you will have to get a sales job first and learn how to close sales, negotiate contracts, etc. I have never heard of any person becoming a sales manager without direct sales experience. Sales is a tough business if you are going to be successful and do it right. And don't for one minute think it's an easy gig for which you don't need any experience, that is simply wrong.
30 years as a highly successful sales representative, sales manager, and director of sales.

The short answer is given already (just apply). In order to land a job, you really need to sell yourself in the interview without going overboard as it is the essence of a good salesperson. Some pointers include: 1. Be passionate about what the company does and the products it makes 2. Be positive 3. Be confident 4. Build Trust (very important, see below) 5. Ask questions and listen Unlike other jobs, sales doesn't need professional qualification. A driven person is often hired as a sales manager. In this environment, landing a sales job will be tough (but not impossible). Good luck!
