My friend is going to a community college right now to get a certificate ( 1 yr ) for pastry and bakery. She loves it! They learn how to bake cakes, cookies, and all sorts of pastries and how to decorate them as well. She is planning on making my wedding cake in september. She wants to do wedding cakes and one day open her own shop. So she is going to be doing cakes and pastries for friends and family and take pictures and make a portfolio. That's how you usually start off and build your client tell. You may also work at local bakeries and grocery stores. You won't make a good living that way though...if you want to make good money you should open up your own little bakery. Try visiting your local community college and see what they have to offer. You can also get a degree in culinary arts with emphasis on baking. Good luck!

i don't think there is a specific career for cake decorating. it should fall under baking. Request info from a culinary school or a culinary program from your local community college. You'll find out everything you need to know from the info.

my partners mother, has started her own cake business, she just started off buying books and reading the techniques and such. if you can buy some 'model cakes' and do them up take photos on them and make a portfolio and start to advertised. People want cakes all the time, birthdays, christenings, baby showers, engagment parties etc. She mainly bought her stuff from ebay because its cheap and its the best place to get it from! Also if you try looking around on the web at the different prices people charge for the different size of cakes you would be able to get a rough idea of what to charge for a cake.
if youd like anymore help feel free to email me.
Best of luck!
