I am looking for a specific job with NOAA?
Asked by musicgizzo
I was wondering what NOAA jobs would land me on a research vessel, I'm not really looking for a deckhand position, or a fisherman mechanic etc. I want a job using instrumentation such as sonar and other technology that monitors the ocean floor, etc... What kind of training do you need to qualify for this? Where do you receive the training? Could I get it in the Coast Guard? Thanks.

NOAA has three distinct kinds of ships each designed for a unique mission. These are hydrographic survey, oceanography, and fisheries. Getting a position on one of these ships means having specific skills for that mission. For example, fisheries ships use deckhands skilled in fishing. They do not have a permanent science crew, but host science teams that come out from labs and universities to do specific projects. Oceanography vessels are similar. The science complement on oceanography vessels is a rotating team that comes aboard from a university or other lab to accomplish some science goal. The people with jobs on the ships are the deckhands, cooks, engineers, and deck officers. Hydrographic survey vessels are different. They employ a permanent crew of hydrographic survey technicians that do the mission work. The people who are likely to be hired on as survey techs have some background in surveying, either land survey or hydro survey, with some skills in GIS (Geographic Information Systems). A degree in a related field like geology, geography, physical oceanography, etc. also is highly regarded. Look at usajobs.com and search for NOAA and survey tech for these jobs. We're always hiring. Good luck! The other option is the NOAA Corps. This is a uniformed service that act as the deck officers on all NOAA ships. For more info on the NOAA Corps, check out http://www.noaacorps.noaa.gov/

Go to the NOAA site and apply. Also join LinkedIn and develop contacts at NOAA that might help you get in. NOAA is a federal govt agency, so go to USAJobs to seek them out.
