Asked by Justin4088
I own a commercial janitorial service and recently I have not been able to get past the receptionist to speak with the person in charge of facility maintenance (phone and in person.) I get the " I will make sure they get this information." comment and then i never hear anything. Receptionist for the most part are courteous and I know they are just doing their job but i can save your company money while providing a great service! Help me out here people!

Hi Justin,
Good question. I agree with "Enchantress" - you need to get the name of the person who would make the decision to switch over to you guys. Once you have the name, you need to sell yourself to him/her, and it becomes a marketing opportunity at that point.
Then, you need to Get Attention and be able to sell yourself. So, you need to find a creative way to stand out in their mind, and get them to notice you. Once you have their attention, you need to keep it long enough for them to want to take action and call you, or at least remember you so that when you follow up, you've already broken the ice and can try to meet with them in person.
I've created a couple of videos teaching job hunters about these concepts, but they apply in your situation too. So, check out the links below for more information on getting attention and the importance of "A Pile" mail.
But, it all starts with getting the name of the person who could hire you, and communicating with them.
Good luck!

1) Most often, they're already going to have janitorial staff in place.
2) the receptionists probably DO give the message, but most likely, the person who makes those decisions doesn't think there's a good reason to get rid of the service they have now, especially if there are no problems.
3) the "person in charge" may be someone who would be really really annoyed at having to deal with a pushy sales person, when they're just trying to get their work done.
4) It would benefit you to be able to get the information to them, without intruding on their time.
You might try going in in person and smiling, say something VERY brief, and hand them a flyer that states your rates. If you're significantly cheaper than their current service, they might consider calling you back, especially if they're trying to find ways to cut their overhead.

Ask for the name of the facility manager. Send them your materials -- pitch letter, brochure, business card. In your pitch letter tell him that you will be following up with a phone call to set up a meeting within a week. Call the receptionist and ask to speak to the manager by name. Tell her that he is expecting your call.
