No, people do this as a career. And alot of them make some good money doing it. A male can definitely apply for the job. My law school has a male in the position to deal with the needs of the faculty/professors. He is very highly respected and relied upon by many people for important things.

Depends on your abilities and experience. As for promotion, the creme de la creme of admin assistant jobs is the executive assistant. Your chances of moving out of admin, however, are poor.
