A cottage industry is usually a small scale industry which does not use a lot of motive power, does not require a lot of financing.
In the South Asian countries you will find a lot of such industries operating at the village level. They can also be found in big cities. Examples are handloom weaving of fabrics, dyeing and printing of fabrics, agro based industries such as dairy and cattle farming, poultry farming.
I think you are from India judging by your name. You must have seen movies on Banarasi silk weaving industries. Ghandhiji started the charkha for home spun yarn which is then used to weave khadi cloth on hand operated loom.
There are also associations that look after the interests of cottage industries at the taluka, district and state level as well as the union level federation of cottage industries. Search on google and lol.
