Free-lance photography is a very difficult career in which to succeed. You must have excellent artistic talent, and good marketing and business skills. It is an art form, and art by itself rarely puts food on the table.
There are professional photographers in many different industries who make a decent living, and yet more who do it part-time as an adjunct to their regular careers. The numbers are small, compared to many other careers, which is why your parents are concerned. In the US, less than twenty percent of those graduating with a degree in photography end up doing it as a full-time career. Most of the others end up doing something completely different, even though they may still practice photography as a hobby.
Jobs are the obvious ones, like fashion, news, event, and travel photography. Nature photography is always interesting, but most nature photographers are biologists or conservationists first, with side training in photography. Product and industrial photographers take pictures of objects or machines for design purposes or product manuals. There are space photographers, otherwise known as astronomers. And medical photography in various forms.
Best of luck to you, photography is fun, and maybe you will have the talent and luck required to make it a paying career!
