Is a grocery store checker versatile for a resume?
Asked by Jessica
I'm a junior in college and this is my last summer home. It's all about resume building! I'm a recreation and tourism major. I work for the park service as a trail builder, and I'm also volunteering on the weekends as a park ranger. I'll have evenings free and I'm looking to save up some extra cash this summer before I graduate.
I'm thinking about applying at a grocery store. This would only be part time since I work 40 hours plus the volunteering on weekends. It would help me work on my people skills. I'm friendly and upbeat so it shouldn't be a problem. It's just I don't have many jobs where I've dealt with people so I really need to have one. I've pretty much done trail building/maintenance until now. I have quite a bit of volunteer work with people so that's pretty much what is saving me on my people skills. Besides, I would rather do this than be a waitress.
Do you think potential employees would appreciate my variety in jobs and would the cashier be a good thing to add?

of course dealing with the public as a cashier is one of the hardest jobs!!! it will be a plus!!!

Grocery cashier is a bit different from tourism in that it involves food product knowledge, cash handling, and working quickly, in addition to being friendly and upbeat. On the other hand, the grocery store is climate-controlled. Try looking for work in your field as you already have experience.
