Which would be a better career. Auto Mechanic or Barber?
Asked by zzz
I am 21 years old, and trying to decide on which degree to pursue at my local community college. My fiancee is a hairstylist, and I think it would be kind of cool to open a business together (Like a Barber Salon). I am also interested in automotive maintenance, but I'm not sure which career has better pay and more job stability. (I know nothing about mechanics, but I'm sure college teaches you everything you need to know). So which do you think would be better?

Being a mechanic takes a LOT more work to get good at. There are multiple licenses and certifications you need to work on different types of automobile. The money you can make, though, is very good if you get good at it and put in the hours. This is not to say that learning the hairstyling trade and running a small business wouldn't take a lot of work and skills, but it is a different kind of study. Two things I might add: Our economy is crashing. This means people will be driving cars for longer before buying new ones, which means mechanics will be valuable. (Though, people will probably drive less. In the Great Depression, in Canada, there was something called a, Bennett Buggy; which was basically a car with its engine removed and pulled by a horse after gas became too expensive to buy. They named it after the Prime Minister, Richard Bennett who was blamed for the nation's poverty.) By contrast, hair doesn't stop growing when people lose their jobs, so being a barber will probably remain somewhat viable in a recession. Though, running your own hairstyle business will be risky, because you'll likely need a business loan to get started. And people can always cut their own hair for free when cash is tight. Just some thoughts. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Well, all I know is that I have a friend who owns her own shop (in Sarasota, FL) and is a barber. She absolutely LOVES it and is making PLENTY of money to support herself and her family.... She thinks its a great job with plenty of stability. Everyone is always going to need to get their hair cut!!! But, on the flip side, everyone is always going to need a good mechanic too. But, hey...at least with the salon/barber shop you will be your own bosses and you can keep your hands clean. :)

Ah, hello!! Auto mechanics!! Everyone right now with the struggling economy have had to resort to keeping their old cars as opposed to buying a new one. There will always be a demand for auto repair. It is appaulling what they charge for simple things that take no time at all to repair, not to mention the things that are major. I'm sure I've paid for a vacation or two for a coulple of mechanics in my day. It's an on going learning process. Take the mechanics classes.

Be a barber. We have enough mechanics that think a piece of paper with "ASE" stamped on it is sufficient to service peoples' vehicles. The whole idea of a certified mechanic is a joke these days. The irony in this question is uncanny.
