can I get unemployment or temporary disability benefits if I work an under the table job?
Asked by tina b
Okay so here is my question. I work an under the table job grooming dogs. I injured my hand (not at work) and cut a tendon... I probably won't be able to work for about 3 months due to necessary surgery. Is there any way I can receive any kind of temporary benefits in the state of new jersey?

Here is the problem since you are injured you would not meet the requirement of ready, willing, and able to work to receive unemployment benefits. I would attempt to collect disability, but since you are working I wouldn't risk it. You really are going to need the disability after your surgery and you may totally blow it and find yourself in a heap of legal troubles. I would try. Hell every other immigrant collects and shouldn't be.

UI benefits are determined by actual worked and appropriately taxed income from a certain part of time. If this is all you have ever done, and never recieved any 1099 that you paid fed tax on and all the other taxes, there is no UI benefit for you, and to admit you worked under the table, its illegal for you and the employer. So as far as it sounds, you do not work. Now go see if you can get disability or something, more likely welfare will be a possible option. Remember though, people with money in a bank account, and a history of paying rent and bills, must provide the info on who gave them that money, a roomate paying rent who will sign a sworn statement they did so, or a spouse paid for it all, and his money is enough to cover all your families spending. Its the bad thing about under the table, it has no benefits built in for you in place.
