How are you supposed to gain experience as a Receptionist if everyone wants experienced people?
Asked by DJinx
I have never had a job as a receptionist and I was wondering what can I do to beef up my resume honestly so that I can get a job. They usually want someone with at least 6 months to a year of experience but I wouldn’t know where to go to get that. I am just starting out and am willing to work hard and I just need some help so I can make money for school. Thanks to any one who can help me.

Start by looking for work as a file clerk. That is an entry-level position. Then you'll get office experience.

You could try to get your foot in the door by starting out in a different position.. and then when they see how awesome you are, you will probably be top pick for the position if and when it comes up... it might take a while, but.... it has worked for me in the past.

It's very frustrating, you may need to volunteer for a few weeks just to get your foot in the door, or start out with a very low paying, entry level position until you have some experience.
Otherwise...sorry but the reality is people do stretch the truth on resume's and will do whatever they have to do to get the job! Find someone who owns a company that could be a reference and stretch the truth a little for ya

I am a receptionist with decades of experience. Moved to a new town, can't get a job. Too many people out there looking for work. You may have to reexamine what work you are willing to do. I have.

Go to a temp agency - that's a great place to start out. you may need to go to more than one in this job climate - you can usually list with several simultaneously to beef up the number of short-term jobs you get. and they can help you get a long-term job.

Being a receptionist is not that hard for a beginner
you answer phones, type a few letters, file, and know who the people are by names that you work for.You can use a computer that's a big plus.
They have people that can do your resume professionally and word it so it doesn't look like a kid typed it. Ask a college (senior) guy or girl to do it for you and pay them 10.00
