Is it possible to become a welder without previous experience?

If so, any advice would help.

Ideally you would want to go to school for it. They touch upon other related aspects such as blueprint reading, drafting, machine shop metallurgy, among others. However, i was once employed with a big manufacturer and they had their own school. They pumped out common labor wire feed welders in just a few days. This was over 30 years ago, things have changed, technology has improved.
Remember you'll be using a welding machine, not a welder. you'll be the welder. That was the first thing I was taught.

A:
no, you will want experience and possibly a degree from a vocational school.

You'd have to attend schooling for it, or start a construction job as a welder helper. Welding is harder than it looks and takes time to perfect. Really, its almost like an art.

Welders dont just fall out of the sky without any previous experience. They have to get a start somewhere. My advice is to find a large shop where you can blend and learn from other people. Also, buy a cheap one to practice with. Thats what i did, and i got some old sheet metal from the junkyard off of old pickup truck beds to practice with.

Think about it man. Who would want to higher a welder that doesn't know how to weld. Companys want it on paper dude. If you dont have some sort of certification its like you don't have anything.

A:
It's highly unlikely, especially in the current job market. But it depends on who's hiring. Welding is a trade and a learned skill, and you usually have to apprentice with someone before you get hired on your own. You'd have better luck looking for an apprenticeship opening than if you applied for a job as a welder, because the first thing they'll ask is how much experience you have.
